We had been talking about taking our oldest two children to see the new movie “42” about Jackie Robinson. I asked my sister-in-law, Grace, and her boyfriend if they’d be willing to watch Hal for us while we all went. They said they would. We then discussed other options and never made a decision.
Saturday night, they stopped by and asked, “Do you still need a babysitter for tomorrow?”
“I thought my husband was going to just stay home,” I replied (that version of the plan had my husband going to see the movie on his own during the week).
“He said either way was fine with him and we’re ok doing it if you need us.”
At this point, Jane jumped in, “Whatever is going on, I want to stay here. At this house.”
“Oh, ok!” I looked up at my sister-in-law. “I guess we don’t need a babysitter after all. Jane is going to stay home with him instead. Thanks, Jane.”
“Wait,” Jane started prevaricating, “I mean. It depends on what’s happening. If it’s something I want to do then, no, I don’t want to stay here. I mean, you know. But if like, you guys are going clubbing or something, I want to be here.”
“Has your mother ever gone clubbing?” Grace laughed.
“Well… you never know…”
